E-Waste Recycling Today in Brooklyn
The Lower East Side Ecology Center is sponsoring an e-waste recycling drive today in Park Slope from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at PS 321, Seventh Avenue between 1st and 2nd Streets.
The next e-waste event in Manhattan will take place on Sunday, January 4 at Union Square Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Because one of my avocations is building and rebuilding computers, I tend to accumulate lots of miscellaneous computer detritus, so I'll be hauling a bunch of it over to the 17th Street end of the park that day. In fact, I'm already getting ready for it! The following items are accepted for recycling:
Working and non-working:
Computers (laptop & desktop),
Servers, mainframes
Monitors
Printers, scanners, fax-machines, copiers
Network devices (routers, hubs, modems, etc.)
Peripherals (keyboards, mice, cables, etc.)
Components (hard drives, CD Roms, circuit boards, power supplies, etc,)
TVs,VCR & DVD Players
Audio visual devices
Radios/Stereos
Cell Phones, pagers
PDAs,Telecommunication (phones, answering machines, etc.)
Media (floppies, cd's, zips, VHS tapes)
Click here for more information about both e-waste programs. The Center also sponsors composting workshops and other programs related to green energy, sustainability, and climate change.

This reminds me of the opening scene of _A Tree Grows in Brooklyn_, when Francie and Neeley make their weekly trip to the "junkie":
"For Francie, Saturday started with the trip to the junkie. She and her brother, Neeley, like other Brooklyn kids, collected rags, paper, metal, rubber, and other junk and hoarded it in locked cellar bins or in boxes hidden under the bed. . .
Soon after nine o'clock of a Saturday morning, kids began spraying out of all the side streets on to Manhattan Avenue, the main thoroughfare. They made their slow way up the Avenue to Scholes Street. Some carried their junk in their arms. Others had wagons made up of a wooden soap box with solid wooden wheels. A few pushed loaded baby buggies."
